? NBA Who’s Hot? – January 23rd ?
Welcome back everyone and Happy Monday. I know, Monday’s aren’t always exciting as we all get back into the Weekly grind of our “real jobs”. We have a nice NBA Slate to look forward to tonight however, with 9 games to dig into. The highlight of the night is sure to be the matchup between the Bucks and Rockets. With Giannis Antetokounmpo and James Harden both dropping nearly 60 fantasy points the other day in this same matchup.
As always I’m going to use our NBA Cheat Sheets to help me identify players who have been on recent hot streaks. I’ll determine this “Hot Streak” by using our “Who’s Hot” metric on the sheets (column “AE”) The Who’s Hot metric shows us the difference in fantasy points per game scored by a player over his Last 3 games, vs his Last 10 games. I will be referencing Fanduel Scoring in the article, but, some of these players could still be viable on Draftkings.
I will do my best to try and explain WHY for you with a few of the players I will highlight below, but, the rest is going to be up to you.
In the above graphic, I’ve included the “Minutes Watch” section of the sheets, to help you get a better understanding of “WHY” some of these players are (HOT) and scoring more fantasy points recently. As most of you know, in NBA DFS, Minutes = Money and generally speaking, if a player has been receiving more minutes than usual, he will likely score more fantasy points than usual.
*NOTE* The graphic above, is sorted by the Hot Column, highest to lowest.
(SG) DeJounte Murray $3,800
10 game avg (11.05) — 3 game avg (22.33)
The Spurs have been dealing with some injury issues in their Backcourt. Tony Parker has been out the past few games and DeJounte Murray has stepped in an put up a few good games in a row. The 29th pick in the 1st round in last years draft has shown that, given the opportunity he will be a viable fantasy option for us going forward. Over his last 3 games he’s playing +10.49 minutes per game compared to his last 10 games. In those 3 games he’s scoring +11.28 fantasy points per game. He’s proving to be a point per minute player and will be someone we’ve got to consider going forward if the Spurs have him in the starting lineup. He gets the best matchup possible tonight, vs the Brookly Nets and if he starts again, he’ll be one of the most popular value plays on the slate.
(SF) Marcus Morris $5,400
10 game avg (27.95) — 3 game avg (38.83)
Here is a guy, who’s price just doesn’t seem to go up regardless of how well he performs. Marcus Morris has been performing above a $5,400 price tag for some time now, and over his last 3 games he’s been performing well over that. With a 3 game average of 38.83 (+10.88) from his last 10, he’s one of the hottest players in the NBA right now. His minutes (38.83) are up +3.26 from his last 10 games (35.46). Tonight he gets a matchup with the Sacramento Kings and it should be a decent matchup for him as the Kings rank middle of the pack in points per game allowed to SF.
(PF) David Lee $5,100
10 game avg (17.70) — 3 game avg (28.23)
As with the Guard Position, the Spurs are also dealing with in their front court as Pau Gasol was recently injured during shootaround. Yeah, I said shootaround when he had a collision with Kyle Anderson while participating in the pre game layup line. That injury has lead to more playing time for veteran PF David Lee and he’s come up big. With 33 and 36 minutes in his last 2 games, his min per game for his last 3 has risen to 27.81, which is +8.66 higher than his 10 game average. In the extended minutes, as expected, his fantasy points per game have gone up as well. Averaging 28.23 over his last 3 games gives Lee a +10.53 average vs his last 10 games. It’s expected that Pau Gasol will be out for an extended period of time while he deals with that broken finger, so, look for David Lee as a mid tier value play going forward. His $5,100 price tag doesn’t put him in “must play” value range, but he is less expensive than other players at his price who aren’t producing as well.
(C) Rudy Gobert $8,100
10 game avg (37.79) — 3 game avg (47.20)
The big man for the Jazz has been playing out of his mind recently. The highlight of his recent hot streak was the 25 / 25 game he had vs the Mavericks a few games ago. In that game he played 41 minutes, scored 27 points and pulled down 25 rebounds. I believe this was the first 25 / 25 game of the NBA Season this year. Over his last 3 games, his minutes are up (+1.88) over his 10 game average and with his fantasy production (+9.41) are also up. With 4 straight double doubles he comes into tonight’s matchup with the Thunder playing some of the best basketball of his career. Tonight’s game with the Thunder is also a huge “Pace Up” matchup for the Jazz, so we should be able to predict more opportunities for fantasy points this evening.
