Below is a game by game breakdown of the QB, RB, and WR for tonight’s slate. Be warned, I will not list TE, K, and DEF.
Atlanta v Miami
QB: Don’t expect Matt Ryan to play much, and the Falcons will have 3 backup QBs under center tonight. Matt Schaub, Matt Simms and Alex Torgerson. Schaub is the really the only viable option and is a familiar name that should gain some ownership. I would look elsewhere for a QB.
RB: Don’t play Freeman, the highest paid RB will not be a great DFS just yet. Backup Tevin Coleman should get the early touches and Terron Ward soon after. The Twitter lovefest is on rookie Brian Hill. He’s going to be owned by the DFS preseason degens and maybe the difference in some GPPs. B.J. Daniels is out.
WR: No Julio Jones or Taylor Gabriel for the Falcons means some backups will move into “starter” roles and get some extras snaps. Justin Hardy and Andre Roberts are the expected starters. Of them, I like Hardy to fill in the “Jones” role. Roberts maybe involved in the KR/PR game so playing the ATL defense with him is a great option.
QB: A chalky play tonight will be Matt Moore. With the signing of Jay Cutler, maybe playing with a chip on his shoulder tonight. I can’t see Jay Cutler playing much and he will probably just be standing on the sidelines smoking cigarettes. Other QBs on the roster maybe a nice GPP play; Brandon Doughty and David Fales. Fales knows the offense from Chicago but Miami has Doughty higher on depth chart. Word is that Brandon Doughty will get a ton of snaps tonight. If he does, he can be very productive in this offense against backups.
RB: No Jay Ajayi tonight, so that bumps up the goal line back of Damien Williams. Kenyan Drake is also on the radar and he played some regular season game with Ajayi out.
WR: Landry, Parker and Still shouldn’t play much. The two players pop up here are Larry Carroo and Drew Morgan. Jakeem Grant is also a nice GPP flier. Morgan should play the slot role and maybe viable on DK where you get 1 point for PPR.
Minnesota v Buffalo
QB: Sam Bradford will play the minimal amount possible per Coach Mike Zimmer. So that’s leaves backup Case Keenum to get extra reps and a good chunk of playing time.
RB: Expected to be the most popular rookie debuting tonight, Dalvin Cook is currently on the top of the depth chart. He has the upside and should be highly owned. With backups, Latavius Murray and McKinnon not playing, Bishop Sankey comes back into your DFS life tonight. I’d expect him to carry some of the load with Cook and possible goal line duties.
WR: Often injured stud Stephon Diggs shouldn’t play much, but I could see him scoring on that first drive and coming out. Jarius Wright should see some time with Case Keenum which should help his production. Michael Floyd will get snaps against backups. Laquon Treadwell has a hand injury so keep an eye out closer to game to see if plays.
QB: Tyrod Taylor will be popular Week 1 in the regular season, tonight it’s his backup that should see some ownership. T.J. Yates has a history with the Bills OC so he knows the offense and should have some success against backups. Should be on your radar tonight.
RB: McCoy will get some snaps but not roster worthy. Backup Jonathan Williams will carry the load as he tries to lock up the #2 job.
WR: Rookie Zay Jones is the Twitter name being thrown about by DFS preseason touts. The other WRs are veterans competing to stay in the league. This is a WR corps to target in the coming weeks.
Jacksonville v New England
QB: Chad Henne is the long standing backup and should play most of the first into the 3rd quarters. He’s a viable option tonight.
RB: The other rookie that folks will want to use is Leonard Fournette. He’s going to popular, but I don’t expect many carries as he will be the centerpiece of the Jaguar offense at some point this season. The other known RBs (Ivory and Yeldon) can be left unused in DFS. Corey Grant might be a sneaky play with most playing Fournette.
WR: The Jags backups can be a great way to win a GPP tonight. Rookie 4th rounder Dede Westbrook has been great during training camp and Marquise Lee was burning Malcom Butler in the inner squad practices. Per one with Henne for correlation points.
QB: Most folks will roster Jimmy Garoppolo, but I suggest Jacoby Brissett. Either way most will flock to either one.
RB: Running backs for NE are always a DFS nightmare and some UDFA seems to breakout by year’s end. This year however it’s a FA signee and another Twitter dream boy; Rex Burkhead that will be trending on Twitter by night’s end.
WR: Last season, Malcom Mitchell was all the talk, this year I expect most to go back to the Mitchell play. The UFDA that’s making noise is Austin Carr.
Washington v Baltimore
QB: Colt McCoy is the man that’s made folks money last DFS preseason and should be in play tonight. 3rd stringer Nate Sudfeld will get mop up duty.
RB: The rookie Samaje Perine should get a nice workload tonight. The Redskins still have former starter Matt Jones. Jones is competing to stay on the roster and may we may see some extra motivation tonight from him.
WR: Terelle Pryor the new toy in D.C. and may see some early targets from Cousins to get the chemistry going and his Fantasy Football ADP up, but that’s it. He’s worth a look in large GPPs ONLY to hope for a first drive score. Backup Ryan Grant has been great in training camp and has been popular preseason play the last 2 years.
QB: No Joe Flacco, so Ryan Mallett gets the start tonight. Look elsewhere for your QB.
RB: The Ravens have a hard read in the regular season on who to play at RB, so the preseason it’s just as difficult to pick one. Other options listed in this article are better plays.
WR: Jeremy Maclin may seem limited snaps, nothing worth rostering. Chris Moore is the team’s #4 WR and may have some value tonight.
New Orleans v Cleveland
QB: Chase Daniels and Garrett Grayson are expected to play most of the QBs snaps. Daniels has been very productive during the preseason and might be the highest scoring QB tonight.
RB: The Saints have the ability to rest some veterans because of depth and the RB that will benefit the most is Alvin Kamara. Once, he’s in he may see the bulk of the carries.
WR: The Saint’s WR corps might have a great night with the horrible Browns defense filled with backups. Stop me if you heard this before “Brandon Coleman is the breakout star for the Saints”…You have? Well, it’s the same vibe this offseason. The guy that I want to see tonight and will have some shares of is former NCAA DFS stud, Tommylee Lewis. Corey Fuller may get some looks tonight too.
QB: This looks to be a great option if you like QB competition. Problem is that you don’t get points that way. Avoid until a starter is named.
RB: One area Browns were successful last season was the running game. Tonight, Matt Dayes is the rookie RB that can get some valuable touches tonight. Duke Johnson is worth a look in full point PPR, but I don’t expect much from him.
WR: Rashard Higgins, Jordan Payton and Ricardo Louis will see plenty of snaps with a rookie QB. I wouldn’t recommend playing them but are listed for FYI. BUT someone has to catch the ball, right?
Denver v Chicago
QB: QB battle here. I would fade this with the other great options above getting more snaps.
RB: DeAngelo Henderson will see a bunch of touches with all the injuries and he makes for a great option tonight. Only back he’s competing with carries is Steven Ridley.
WR: The other Henderson, Carlos Henderson will see some targets and should be someone to consider tonight. If you roll with Denver’s defense tonight, I suggest you play Isiah McKenzie who should be on KR/PR and has breakaway ability.
QB: 1st round draft pick, Mitchell Trubisky and Mike Glennon are expected to battle for the starting job also so I would stay away from this until it settles.
RB: Tarik Cohen is having a great camp and is someone to keep an eye on tonight and moving forward, he can be a very good play at low ownership.
WR: The Bears have a great mixture of young WRs and old WRs. I don’t see much of any value from them tonight. Look elsewhere.
Green Bay v Philadelphia
QB: No Rodgers tonight and all the Twitter love is going to Brett Hundley. Hundley should get a chance to showcase with some starters and is expected to perform well.
RB: No more Eddie Lacy, means Ty Montgomery takes over as #1 but I would expect him to play very little tonight. Backup Jamaal Williams was a nice play last preseason and could find the end zone tonight. Rookie Devante Mays is competing to make the team.
WR: Geronimo Allison, though suspended the 1st game, is able to play tonight. He’s going to be a favorite target of Hundley.
QB: Keep an eye on Nick Foles, if he is out, Matt “PLAYOFF STARTER” McGloin should lead most of the offense tonight.
RB: Philly RBs are like the Ravens, the hot hand will be feed and it’s very hard to pick just one. With other options on the board at RB getting solid looks, it’s a place to avoid. If you want to play one, I would go Donnel Pumphfrey
WR: Mack Hollins and Bryce Treggs are the two WRs that will eat up most of the snaps tonight, Bryon Marshall is listed as a WR and we may see some Shelton Gibson targets.
***In closing, there is a lot of great options in each game and remember that DFS preseason is about opportunity. Focus on those players. ***
I hope you enjoyed the write-up and best of luck tonight!
