The Triple Deke will be a daily piece written by myself and my co-writer Kassim Kamani (@Kamani31) on an alternating basis. Each day we will give you two of our favorite plays in three different pricing tiers; High, Medium, and Low as well as a goalie play. For the season opener, we will be bringing you two articles. I will be looking at the DraftKings plays and Kassim will be our Fanduel expert. Hopefully throughout the year we can help you all win some money. So without further ado, let’s get The Triple Deke started!
High Dollar Plays
W – Patrick Kane CHI ($7,500 DK)
Kane has hit a rough patch in the past ten days when it’s come to his offensive performance. He has registered just two points and fifteen shots in his previous five games combined, which is poor by his standards. This has resulted in a shakeup of the Blackhawks’ lines and now Kane will be skating up top with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp. This trio was deadly back in the 2009-10 season when they led Chicago to a Stanley Cup Championship. These guys have shown their chemistry and offensive power which will hopefully be enough of a spark for Kane to return to his MVP scoring form.
D – Alex Pietrangelo STL ($6,800 DK)
Pietrangelo continues to be a dominant force on the St. Louis blue line and has averaged almost a full point per game this season after doing so at the end of last season as well after Shattenkirk was traded away. Tonight he squares off at home against a weak Arizona team that struggles to contain opposing defensemen. Pietrangelo’s 82 shots and blocked shots already this season show that he has a phenomenal floor with his cross-category filling stats. A cash and a GPP play is fine.
Mid Dollar Plays
C – Paul Stastny STL ($5,300 DK)
Stastny makes for a great tournament pick tonight as everyone will most likely be flocking to the other St. Louis center, Brayden Schenn. Schenn has registered seven points in his past two games and has been on fire for most of the season. Stastny meanwhile has struggled at times, but is still able to produce multi-point games. Mentioned earlier with Pietrangelo, the Blues face a terrible Arizona team tonight and should have no issue lighting the lamp. The top line of St. Louis will most likely be the highest owned on the slate, so bumping to the second/third line gives you distance while still being in a great spot.
D – Will Butcher NJ ($4,600 DK)
Tonight a top tier powerplay unit will be facing the worst penalty kill in the league. Edmonton’s penalty kill is at 69.6% on the season which is a full four percentage points lower than the team ahead of them. On the other side of the puck, New Jersey’s powerplay is cruising and Will Butcher leads the team with seven powerplay points so far. His offensive output has definitely slowed since the start of the season, but that is not concerning to me at all. With his dependency on goals and assists for fantasy production, he is a GPP play only.
Low Dollar Plays
C – Derek Grant ANA ($3,900 DK)
The Ducks have been prone to the injury bug the entire season and that will continue for some time. With their top two centers out, Derek Grant has seen a bump to the top line for Anaheim. A skater who typically sees 12-13 minutes a night of ice time, has been in the 17-19 range lately. He’s currently on a five game point streak, with points in eight of his past nine overall. The fact you are able to get this production and spot for under $4K on DraftKings makes him a fantastic salary saver in cash formats.
W – Michael Ferland CGY ($4,300 DK)
Ferland is absolutely loving life on the top line of Calgary skating alongside Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. And life gets even better when he’s playing at home. In his past seven games, Ferland has had a DK points floor of 2.5 while eclipsing 4.0 in four of the seven. His offensive production has sky rocketed since being placed with those two playmakers and faces off at home against a struggling Detroit team. GPP or cash game play would be fine.
G – Jake Allen STL ($8,400 DK)
I don’t normally prefer to pay this much for my goaltender, but Allen is in prime position to secure an easy three points for the win. Allen has a 6-1 record at home the season and will face a 1-8-1 Coyotes road team. Arizona is not the worst shooting team in the league and will still be able to generate enough shots to keep Allen busy and fantasy relevant. St. Louis has been dominant at home all around and Allen should easily reach at least 6.0 DK points tonight.
