The Triple Deke will be a daily piece written by myself and my co-writer Kassim Kamani (@Kamani31) on an alternating basis. Each day we will give you two of our favorite plays in three different pricing tiers; High, Medium, and Low as well as a goalie play. For the season opener, we will be bringing you two articles. I will be looking at the DraftKings plays and Kassim will be our Fanduel expert. Hopefully throughout the year we can help you all win some money. So without further ado, let’s get The Triple Deke started!
High Dollar Plays
C – Blake Wheeler WPG ($7,500 DK)
Wheeler leads the powerful Jets offense tonight against a Sabres team that is not playing to their potential this season. Winnipeg owns one of the best offenses on home ice this season and have been on full display lately. Apart from a 5-1 loss to Chicago last month, Winnipeg has been averaging 5.2 goals/game on home ice since before Thanksgiving. Wheeler has been front and center in that averaging 1.61 points/game on home ice over the course of the season. With Scheifele injured, Wheeler has stepped up his game even more and in my opinion is the biggest lock of the night. Winnipeg will easily be the chalk for the slate, so fading Wheeler in GPP may be the smart play to differentiate, but for cash formats he is a must for me.
W – Josh Bailey NYI ($6,500 DK)
Josh Bailey has been one of the hottest players in the entire NHL. He gets the benefit of playing on the top line with John Tavares and the two of them along with Anders Lee really complement each other. Bailey has 17 points in his last 10 games and when he plays at home he has 30 points in 19 games. He makes for a great stack with Tavares, however if you are not the stacking type, he gets you exposure to Tavares for a $800 discount. The Islanders are at home today to face the Pittsburgh Penguins who are really struggling as of late in both scoring and preventing goals. I really like Bailey today and makes for a great play in cash and GPP formats.
Mid Dollar Plays
C – Dylan Larkin DET ($6,100 DK)
Detroit welcomes a Florida team to town tonight that allows the most shots on net per game in the entire league. Dylan Larkin not only leads the Red Wings in shots on net this season, but he is also the team leader in points and assists. He currently rides a four game point streak and points in seven of his past ten games. The Panthers are the second worst team in the NHL at limiting opposing centers to fantasy production. I wouldn’t mind him in a cash or GPP format.
W – Mathieu Perreault WPG ($4,900 DK)
Perrault and the Jets are at home today to face the Buffalo Sabres. As mentioned all season, the Sabres have really struggled this year and are coming off a 6-2 drubbing at the hands of the Minnesota Wild. The Winnipeg Jets are the top home scoring team in the league and even with Schiefele going down for injury the team is still producing. A lot of that has to do with Blake Wheeler moving to C on the top line and one of the beneficiaries is Perrault. Perrault is averaging 1.2 points/game at home this year and he gets you some cheap exposure to the top Jets line against the worst ranked team against Wingers this season.
Low Dollar Plays
D – Jordan Oesterle CHI ($3,600 DK)
A cheap defensemen playing over 20 minutes a game on the top D pairing and gets PP time, sign me up. Oesterle has continued to reach his value over his last 10 games and has now had 3 straight games with 5 or more DK points. He has a decent matchup facing a Vegas team that is not as sharp on the road and is on a back to back. The great thing about Oesterle is that he is producing in the peripheral stats which really brings up his floor and makes any goals or assists icing on the cake. He makes for a great cap space saving play in both GPP and cash games.
D – Matt Hunwick PIT ($3,100 DK)
Since losing a key piece of their defense in the game after Christmas, Matt Hunwick has stepped up to the plate. A regular 14-16 minute per game player, Hunwick has seen his minutes increased to 21+ minutes per game since being moved to the top defensive pairing. He is unlikely to score you a goal or assist, but his fantasy production comes from his blocked shots and shots on net. In his three games since being moved up, Hunwick has 13 shots/blocked shots which translate to him reaching cash value in each game. At just $3.1K he is a punt play with a decent floor for his price, and allows you some top skaters from teams like Winnipeg and New York.
G – Jimmy Howard DET ($7,700 DK)
Howard has looked sharp lately winning three consecutive starts while allowing just four goals. In each of the three games Howard has accumulated at least 8.4 DK points which is well above his GPP value. Tonight he squares off against a Florida team that ranks 5th in the league in shots on net, but 21st in goals. They take low danger shots making it easy for opposing goalies to accrue fantasy points. In two games this season against Florida, Howard is 1-0-1 with a .947sv%. A cash viable play in my opinion.
