The Triple Deke will be a daily piece written by myself and my co-writer Kassim Kamani (@Kamani31) on an alternating basis. Each day we will give you two of our favorite plays in three different pricing tiers; High, Medium, and Low as well as a goalie play. For the season opener, we will be bringing you two articles. I will be looking at the DraftKings plays and Kassim will be our Fanduel expert. Hopefully throughout the year we can help you all win some money. So without further ado, let’s get The Triple Deke started!
High Dollar Plays
C – Connor McDavid EDM ($8,400 DK)
I know, I know. We’re three games into the regular season and I have already mentioned McDavid twice. But DK refuses to move his price when he is in an incredible spot and I am going to take full advantage of it. Last time McDavid was on The Triple Deke, he lit the lamp three times for that glorious hat trick. Tonight he squares off at home against Winnipeg who is allowing 38.0 shots per game so far (Yes, it is early in the season for stat averages, but WPG has always been known for weak D). On the other side of that stat, Edmonton will be one of the highest shot taking teams in the league this year and McDavid is #1. By now you should all know just how insane of a player McDavid is and the scoring ability he possesses. Another three-point performance by him tonight would not surprise anyone in the NHL community.
W – Nikita Kucherov TB ($6,800 DK)
The battle between Tampa Bay and Washington tonight has so much star talent there are bound to be goals. To add to the fact, in each of their first four games of the season combined, every game has had seven or more goals and they have combined for 33 goals overall (8.3 goals/game). Both offenses are cruising, and both defenses have struggled out of the gates. It is important to note that Ovechkin has scored 7 goals in his first two games, including a hat trick in each, but I expect full attention to be given to him tonight and then some. Kucherov is one of the best GPP plays in the league as his 23 multi-point games last season finished 4th overall. With a reduced price facing an elite goaltender, Kucherov playing on the top line at home, on the top powerplay, alongside Stamkos, is in a great position for another multi-point effort in a game that should see plenty of goals.
Mid Dollar Plays
C – Nazem Kadri TOR ($5,100 DK)
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been absolutely incredible to watch in the first two games of the season as they posted 15 goals in them (7 , 8). They are getting production from all over the lineup, but the current leader with four points (2 goals, 2 assists) is Nazem Kadri. Kadri centers the top Leafs powerplay unit and will get to face a weak penalty kill team in the Blackhawks. Chicago finished last season 24th in the PK and lost a big defensive player in Hjalmarsson during the offseason. The Leafs are currently 5/10 on the powerplay early on which is blistering hot! The Leafs should easily be able to get a powerplay goal this game, if not more, and Kadri will most likely be a part of it all.
W – James van Riemsdyk TOR ($6,200 DK)
Van Riemsdyk is in a similar position with Kadri, but his benefit is playing even strength on the top line with the likes of Auston Matthews. Playing at home, Toronto gets the second line change meaning he will be able to avoid to best of Chicago’s defenders. This is Chicago’s first away game of the season, and it will be interesting to see how they handle the firepower of Toronto after being able to shut down two other top offenses in PIT and CLB at home. Van Riemsdyk also plays on the top PP unit for Toronto, which mentioned in the Kadri write-up is in an incredible spot tonight. Leading the team in shots on goal and powerplay points so far, van Riemsdyk is a main staple in this high flying offense.
Low Dollar Plays
D – Kris Russell EDM ($3,400 DK)
Kris Russell is one of the best players in the league at getting in front of opponent shots and giving you fantasy points in the blocked shots category. In 81 games last season, Russell accumulated 267 of them to go along with 84 shots on goal. Do all the math and that gave Russell an average floor of 2.1 DK points/game last season. The does not even take into account his possible goal or assist totals. Russell in two games this season has seven blocked shots, five shots on net, a goal, and an assist. That’s good for 11 DK points (5.5 per/game) at just 3.4K. Don’t expect him to keep this pace obviously, but at 3.4K he is far too cheap with his floor.
D – Travis Hamonic CGY ($3,200 DK)
Hamonic is Kris Russell 2.0. He is, and always has been, a super cheap defenseman that provides a solid floor because of his ability to block shots. The Calgary defender played just 49 games last season, but still accounted for 108 blocked shots and 74 shots on net. He will shoot more than Russell and had an average floor of 1.9 DK points last season, not including the 28 points he was on pace for last year. He’s far too cheap for the fantasy production he provides.
G – Mike Smith CGY ($7,400 DK)
Ryan Kesler, Sami Vatanen, Hampus Lindholm, Patrick Eaves, Ryan Getzlaf, Nick Ritchie, Ryan Miller. That is the current injury list for Calgary’s opponent tonight, Anaheim. Most of Anaheim’s top players are on that list on both the offensive and defensive side of things. Mike Smith has always been a goalie most DFS players avoid, but he is in a great spot for his cheap price on DraftKings. While I wouldn’t put Smith in your cash lineups tonight, he is an amazing GPP play with all of the issues Anaheim is facing.
