The Triple Deke will be a daily piece written by myself and my co-writer Jonathan Scharf (@McKinley_412) on an alternating basis. Each day we will give you two of our favourite (yes that’s how you spell it in Canada) plays in 3 different pricing tiers, High, Medium, and Low as well as a goalie play. For the season opener, we will be bringing you two articles, Jonathan will be looking after the Draftking plays and I will be looking at the Fanduel plays. Hopefully throughout the year we can help you guys win some money. So without further ado, let’s get the Triple Deke started.
High Dollar Plays
C: Sidney Crosby – Pittsburgh Penguins ($9100 FD)
Crosby and the Penguins played yesterday and are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild. Today they get to face-off against the Winnipeg Jets who lately have been better defensively but still sit in the bottom 10 in the league in goals against. Throughout his career Crosby has 52 points in 33 career games against the Jets and even though he is most likely going to have high ownership, on such a big slate I am okay with that. I am going to be using him in both GPP and Cash lines.
W: Johnny Gaudreau – Calgary Flames ($7200 FD)
Gaudreau and the Flames are up against the Washington Capital tonight who will be playing on a back to back. Yesterday the Capitals came away with a nice 5-2 win over the Oilers, but that doesn’t mean that they are any less injured or any less weaker on the penalty kill. Washington’s defence is still hurt and with most likely their backup in net tonight they could be in for a tough time. I really like Gaudreau tonight and the Calgary powerplay and I can see Gaudreau getting a multi point game. I will be using him more in GPPs but he is also a fine Cash game play.
Mid Dollar Plays
D: Dustin Byfuglien – Winnipeg Jets ($5800 FD)
The Jets are going to be facing the Pittsburgh Penguins today and they will be on the second night of a back to back game. To start the season, the Penguins have really been struggling to keep the puck out of their own net, so far they have given up the 5th most goals against per game. To potentially add on to their troubles tonight, they will most likely have a rookie goaltender in tonight and with the firepower that Winnipeg has they should be able to take advantage. I like Byfuglien tonight as he anchors the first unit powerplay and should see time with all of the Winnipeg stars during 5v5. He averages more than 2 shots and 1 block a game so he has nice peripheral stats as well. I like Byfuglien more as a cash game play today but can definitely be used in a GPP as part of a WPG stack.
C: Niklas Backstrom – Washington Capitals ($6500 FD)
Backstrom came back last night after a couple of games off with injury and wasn’t able to produce any points. He is right back at it tonight against the Calgary Flames who for whatever reason have been far worse at home than on the road. Mike Smith starts for the Flames tonight and he has a 3.16 gaa at home and a .891 save percentage. That couple with the fact that Calgary has the 5th worst pk% in the league I think Washington could put up a few goals today. Kuznetsov has been the hot hand for Washington so I can see his ownership being a little higher than Backstrom’s today. I will be using him in GPPs today.
Low Dollar Plays
D: Brandon Montour – Anaheim Ducks ($4300 FD)
With all the injuries that the Anaheim Ducks have had to their defence, Brandon Montour has been thrusted into the top D pairing and is playing top minutes. Slowly but surely Anaheim is starting to get healthy but as of now I don’t see Montour playing time being cut down. In yesterdays game he was put onto the top PP unit and rewarded the coach with a PPG. The best thing for the ducks PP is that Ryan Getzlaf appears to be healthy now and I can see that benefitting Montour alot. He is a great GPP play for todays slate.
C: Derek Ryan – Carolina Hurricanes ($3500 FD)
Just like last time, I am going to use this last spot to try and find a low dollar GPP play and I think that Ryan fits that role tonight. Derek Ryan centres a line that sees Skinner and Williams as his wingers. Of Carolina’s top 3 centers, Ryan is usually the lowest owned and I see no reason for that to change tonight. With Anaheim on a back to back and Ryan Miller most likely making his season debut tonight, Carolina has a chance to put up some goals. Ryan is a GPP play only as he is very point dependant, however with his low salary it will not take much for him to reach value.
G: Scott Darling – Carolina Hurricanes ($7700 FD)
Today is not the greatest slate for goaltenders as we have a bunch of backups playing and the starters that are playing are not in the best of positions. I am going to go with Darling today as this game should be the lowest scoring of the slate and I will go with the team that is the biggest favourite on the night. Anaheim is also on the back end of a back to back and I always like going with the home team when a road team is in that position. A win for Carolina is by no way guaranteed, however I think Darling could be the safest option on the board today.

I live in Vancouver, Canada and as a profession I work in the Hospital as an x-ray technologist. I have been a rabid sports fanatic since I can remember. When I was growing up, my favourite sports teams were at their peaks; Cowboys were winning Superbowls, the Pacers were breaking the hearts of Knicks fans, Bluejays were winning World Series, and the Canucks were a post away from Messier not raising another cup. The sports life was good. Slowly but surely however, my sports teams’ successes started to diminish. Thats when I turned to season long fantasy sports, to add a little excitement to my sports life and have been playing that format ever since. Eventually, I became a victim of all the advertisement and tried my hand at DFS. I currently play NHL and NFL DFS, and am starting to try my hand at PGA
