The Triple Deke will be a daily piece written by @Kamani31 and my co-writer Jonathan Scharf (@McKinley_412) on an alternating basis. Each day we will give you two of our favourite (yes that’s how you spell it in Canada) plays in 3 different pricing tiers, High, Medium, and Low as well as a goalie play. For the season opener, we will be bringing you two articles, Jonathan will be looking after the Draftkings plays and I will be looking at the Fanduel plays. Hopefully throughout the year we can help you guys win some money. So without further ado, let’s get the Triple Deke started.
High Dollar Plays
C: Auston Matthews – Toronto Maple Leafs ($7900 FD)
Coming back from injury Auston Matthews didn’t miss a beat as he scored 2 goals in his return. Today Matthews gets to face off against his home town team in the Arizona Coyotes and you know he is going to want to put up a special performance. In addition to that, Matthews is also playing in his 100th game so there is lots of narrative for him today. Helping his cause is that the Arizona Coyotes have given up the most goals per game in the NHL. This is a dream matchup for Matthews and the Leafs and I like for them to continue their hot streak today. Matthews can be used in both GPP and cash today, however expect very high ownership for him.
W: Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals ($8600 FD)
Alexander Ovechkin and the Capitals are at home today against the Calgary Flames. Over the last few games, Ovi has struggled to find the back of the net, he hasn’t scored in 5 games and only has 3 goals in his last 13 games and they all came in consecutive games. The good news is that Ovechkin is shooting the puck a lot, to the tune of 16 shots over his last 3 games. The puck is going to find the back of the net soon for him and it could be a good day for him to do it. The Flames over their last 5 games have given up 24 goals, almost 5 goals a game. I like Ovechkin today as a GPP play where you might be able to get him at a little lower ownership considering his price and struggles lately.
Mid Dollar Plays
W: Michael Ferland – Calgary Flames ($5200 FD)
Just like the way the Flames are giving up goals in bunches, they are also scoring them in bunches. The top line for the flames have been on fire and that includes Michael Ferland. Ferland over his last 8 games has scored in 6 of them and during that span he has been shooting the puck at a healthy rate. The Flames over their last 5 games have scored 23 goals and the powerplay is clicking at 36.8%. Today they face off against the Capitals who have given up their fair share of goals as well. This game could potentially be high scoring and I will be using Ferland in both GPP and potentially cash as well in order to get exposure to the Calgary top line.
D: Roman Josi – Nashville Predators ($5900 FD)
The Nashville Predators are hosting the Winnipeg Jets today and are going to be looking to continue their strong play. At home the Predators have been dominant sporting a 6-1-1 record. They have also started scoring more as they have 22 goals over their last 5 games. Roman Josi has been the best offensive defenseman for the Preds as he has 12 points in 16 games and has been hot of late with points in 3 straight. Josi will be facing off against the Jets which have been pretty good in preventing goals with Hellebuyck in net, so I prefer Josi more in GPP today.
Low Dollar Plays
D: Jared Spurgeon – Minnesota Wild ($4800 FD)
Jared Spurgeon has been rock steady for the Minnesota Wild this year as he has accumulated 14 points in 19 games. Aside from the points, Spurgeon has been delivering with the peripheral stats as well as he is averaging a combined 4 sog/bs per game. The Wild are facing off against the New Jersey Devils today and the Devils are middle of the pack when it comes to goals against. Since Spurgeon has such a nice floor, I will be using him in Cash games mostly, however is worth a look in GPPs as well.
W: Christian Fischer – Arizona Coyotes ($3400 FD)
Fischer and the Coyotes travel to Toronto today to face the Maple Leafs. Toronto has been one of the hottest teams in the league and Andersen has been really good lately. That being said, Toronto has been susceptible to giving goals up and Arizona could be a sneaky play today. Fischer plays on the second line for Arizona and on the top PP and on the season has 8 points in 16 games. Fischer has 4 points in his last 7 games and is going to be very low owned GPP only option today.
G: Robert Lehner – Buffalo Sabres ($7200 FD)
Lehner and the Buffalo Sabres are at home today against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Sabres have really struggled this season with a record of 5-11-4 and their goaltender Lehner has struggled with inconsistent play. That being said, when Lehner plays at home he appears to be a completely different goalie as he is sporting a 1.52 GAA and a .952 save %. Despite his great numbers at home he only has 2 wins which shows how much Buffalo has struggled to score. Buffalo’s scoring woes combined with a pretty tough matchup against Columbus makes Lehner a GPP play only, however I think he has the potential to put a big score and differentiate you from the herd.
